My engine started giving the first signs of being about to die - not only did the oil light flicker at idle, it also made tell-tale banging sounds when first started up. All of this indicated worn bearings. Rather than wait for the engine to self-destruct, I decided it was time to rebuild it. So out it came again. 

The first stage, of course, was to remove the engine and pull it apart.
